Dr Basia (Barbara) Lowes is a fully qualified, Sydney-based, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with an interest in Minimally Invasive & Laparoscopic Surgery. She received her Medical Degree from the University of Sydney in 2010, having previously completed a Bachelor of Law with Honours. Her general medical training was completed through the Northern Sydney Local Health District, and she went onto specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Royal Darwin Hospital in the Northern Territory. She was the Senior Registrar at The Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick, which included experience in high-risk obstetrics, colposcopy, laparoscopic and pelvic floor surgery, research and education.
Dr Lowes is proud to be a female obstetrician & gynaecological surgeon with additional training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery accredited by the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy Surgery Society (AGES). She provides a complete range of gynaecological services with a special interest in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery including laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) and hysteroscopy, including laparoscopic hysterectomy, myomectomy, and excision of endometriosis.
She is happy to explore conservative, medical, and surgical approaches and will involve additional allied healthcare and complementary professionals in your care if required. Her training has given her the knowledge and expertise to look after the needs of women with an empathetic and holistic approach. She can help you determine if surgery is the right option for you, when to perform surgery and what type of surgery is best suited to your needs. With a vast network of skilled professional contacts around Sydney, Dr Lowes can help facilitate access to multidisciplinary care and a team-based approach for high-risk obstetrics cases and complex gynaecology cases.
Dr Lowes is an active member of the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society and is a representative on various College committees. She presents regularly at conferences & meetings and has published in academic journals on various OBGYN topics. She is passionate about supporting education & wellbeing of current & future generations of doctors, midwives and medical students, and is involved in teaching through RANZCOG, AGES, the University of Western Sydney and the University of Notre Dame.

What do Dr Lowes’ credentials mean?
- Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic & Gynaecological Surgery (AGES Accredited): This is a prestigious and highly competitive two year fellowship accredited with the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopic & Surgery Society (AGES), for management of complex gynaecological conditions, including endometriosis, cysts, prolapse, infertility, fibroids, and pelvic pain. Dr Lowes completed this at the Sydney West Advanced Pelvic Surgery (SWAPS) unit, attaining experience and proficiency in advanced laparoscopy, including: endometriosis excision, infertility surgery laparoscopic hysterectomy, pelvic floor surgery & advanced hysteroscopic surgery, in addition to performing vaginal surgery, abdominal surgery, robotic surgery. She is one of the few female advanced gynaecological surgeon’s in the North Shore of Sydney.
- Fellow of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG): This represents a specialist qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology recognised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). A clinician obtains a fellowship after undertaking a minimum of six years in specialist training by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and demonstrates the attainment of the highest standards of professional excellence and her ongoing commitment to adhering to the rigorous training and assessment requirements set forth by the College.
- Masters of Surgery in Advanced Gynaecological Surgery (University of Western Sydney): This is a higher postgraduate qualification reflecting additional study and training in the area of minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, including robotics, in addition to the 6 years of general O&G training. This 2-year Masters focused on the foundations of surgery, research, and learning from the leading surgeons, whilst also providing a platform to embrace future developments and innovations, uniquely qualifying Dr Lowes to perform highly skilled gynaecological procedures, while providing up-to-date and evidenced based care.
- Masters of Women’s Health Medicine with Excellence (University of NSW): This is a higher postgraduate qualification reflecting additional study in the area Women’s Health. This specialized program focused on the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive disorders, including infertility, menstrual irregularities, and hormonal imbalances as well as, antenatal care, gynaecology, menopause, contraception, cancer care and uro-gynaecology with a focus on accessing and analysing evidenced-based practices and current research in these areas.
